How a Cruise Helped Us Save Money During a Layoff

So here we are!

After another layoff, we were deep in survival mode. From cooking three meals a day to avoid eating out, homeschooling, taking care of a toddler, and my husband (lol).

The mental load started to take its toll.

Not to mention, grocery prices are constantly climbing with no end in sight.

LIFE WAS EXHAUSTING!

We needed a reset. A nice vacation. Nothing luxurious. Just something to give us a break from the everyday stress of being laid off.

So we did something unconventional.

We booked a cruise!

Why a Cruise Actually Made Sense for Us

On paper, a cruise sounds like the opposite of responsible when money is tight. But once we ran the numbers, it started to make sense.

Plus, NCL (not sponsored, I promise) had an amazing beginning-of-the-year deal we couldn’t pass up. $1,300 for a family of four, eight days, and seven nights.

All meals included. No grocery shopping. No cooking. No “what’s for dinner?” conversations, or a fixed cost we could plan around.

At home, food alone was draining our budget and energy. On the cruise, we knew exactly what we were spending and didn’t have to think about meals at all. We even got to try a few specialty restaurants as a promotion with our booking.

And honestly? The mental break mattered just as much as the financial one.

We Saved More Than Money

Yes, we saved on food. But we also gained something we didn’t realize we were missing.

We slowed down. We met like-minded families. The kids made new friends.

There were no schedules to manage, no kitchen to clean, no endless cycle of meals and messes.

We sat together longer. We laughed more. We watched our kids experience new things without worrying about the cost of every moment.

For a season that feels so uncertain, the cruise gave us something more: time together without constant stress hanging over us.

Making Memories

This wasn’t a picture-perfect vacation.

We were still laid off. Still figuring things out. Still living in uncertainty. Still watching our money when it came to extras like wine.

But for those days, we were present.

Our kids won’t remember the money stress or the sleepless nights worrying. They’ll remember pool days, late-night dance parties, and being together, somewhere new.

And that matters.

Sometimes Survival Doesn’t Look Like Sacrifice

I think we’re taught that hard seasons have to look miserable to be responsible.

That if you’re struggling, you’re supposed to pause joy.

But what if survival sometimes looks like finding creative ways to care for your family and your mental health?

What if choosing rest is part of getting through?

This cruise wasn’t about escaping reality. It was about navigating it differently.

Still Figuring It Out

This isn’t a success story, but it is a reminder that even in uncertain seasons, there’s room for connection, creativity, and small wins.

If you’re in a tough financial season and feeling guilty for wanting a break, this is your sign to think outside the box.

Because we are not failing. We are just adapting.

And sometimes, that’s more than enough.

If you’re walking through a hard season of motherhood, finances, or unexpected change, you’re not alone here. This space is for the messy, the real, and the moments we’re all just winging it together.

Do you have anything you want to plan that you are afraid to move forward with? Talk it out with me. I may not have all of the answers, but I will support you.

Xoxox,

Winging it Dishes

This week, I give you permission to order out and take time for yourself. Taking a break from cooking gave me time to recharge. I now have the energy to find new recipes and try new dishes. Our take-out meal for this week was from an Amish Market.

Here are more quick-eats ideas that we enjoy during my “no-cook” days.

Chick-fil-A grilled nuggets + fruit cup

Panda Express string bean chicken + super greens

Veggie egg scramble with toast

Turkey & hummus wrap

Rice + beans bowl with salsa

Mini pita veggie pizzas
